If anyone’s ever stumbled upon my blog in the past… They’ve probably heard me go on and on about my dream to dance with “Dancing With The Stars” pro, Tristan MacManus. That’s still a dream, but I’d like to add others to it.
The Male Pros - Let’s start with the Troupe members. Henry Byalikov and Sasha Farber. These two energizing and charismatic dancers know how to work the floor. UNBELIEVABLE talent, and hey they’re easy on the eyes. Henry has been a major sweetheart (we did the 1st ep of DWTS:BEHIND THE CURTAIN TOGETHER! WOO!), and Sasha is just a teddy bear. He’s so sweet and as much as I’ve supported him, he’s supported me right back. Love you Farbs and H! So, for the DWTS male pros? Well, obviously Tristan. He’s been the lucky charm that got me back into dancing, launched my DWTS blogging career, and he’s a remarkable dancer. The other male pro would have to be Val Chmerkovskiy. I wasn’t fond of the Chmerkovisky brothers at first. What Val did with Zendaya was mind blowing. I thought Anna Trebunskaya and Evan Lysacek’s Argentine Tango was the best one of the series? Nope. It was the one Val and Zendaya did. INCREDIBLE.
The Female Pros: From the troupe, I’d love to dance with Emma Slater and Witney Carson. Emma is a bombshell that has precision talent like no other. Her choreo and technique are off the charts. Not to mention she’s a lovely girl. Witney is like a dueling pistol. You never know when she’s gonna strike… and BAM! She’s sharp, fiery and dangerous in the sultry department. The girl delivers sensuality in a dance. For the pros… I’d love to dance with Anna Trebunskaya and Sharna Burgess. These two powerful ladies are just incredible on the floor. The emulate what a strong female dancer in ballroom can do.
The Style: I’d have to go with this massive big mash-up routine. Start out with something cheeky like a Cha-Cha to Lady Marmalade, transition into a sexy rumba with “Something Stupid” by Michael Bublé and Reese Witherspoon, then finish strong with a Samba to “Magalehna.”
In all seriousness, I just want to say that I do dream of dancing with these incredible people. I chose them for a reason. Whether it’s inspiration from interacting with them, or watching them they do make me want to dance. They tell stories, they lift spirits and touch hearts. Sasha and Emma: I can’t say enough good words about you both. You two rock my world. So sweet and so talented. Thank you for everything. Tris: Everyone knows how badly I want the chance to dance with you. There’s a rare genuine quality about your artistry. Keep killing it on the dance floor, and maybe one day we will dance together. Henry: H! You are personified charisma. So nice and killer talent that shows every time you dance. Major Major props. Hope we can dance together! Sharna: Babe! You’re the rocker chick that worked really hard to get where she is, but earned it earnestly with a big amount of talent. LOVE you, girl. And I can’t wait to print our interview when it’s finished. To the rest of the pros, I wouldn’t have taken a step in dance if it weren’t for you all. Thanks for giving something I’m so passionate about. Maybe this routine will happen someday. Who knows? Crazier things have happened.
Scott Hastings is someone a lot of people can find relatable. He’s tired of “dancing someone else’s steps,” and wants to enjoy his own original creative expression. The man who brought this memorable character to life is Paul Mercurio – star of Baz Luhrmann’s first film venture, Strictly Ballroom. It’s been over 20 years since the movie first released. I discussed with Mercurio his career, his passions for cooking and more in our interview.
The film on a lot of lips at the moment is The Great Gatsby. What’s it been like for you to see Baz Lurhmann’s work evolve after working with him?
I hate to admit it but I haven’t seen Baz’s last three movies so I don’t really feel like I can tell you with any certainty whether or not he or his work has evolved. I do think Romeo + Juliet was an outstanding achievement, a ground breaking piece of work and possibly the best film he has made. Baz seems to have put himself into this epic cinema type of box where his films are over the top, bright, big and bold which possibly means his work hasn’t evolved rather he just keeps trying to go bigger and bolder. I would love to see him do something really paired back and simple the opposite to the sort of work he has always done just to see what he would do and importantly see who he is as a director and story teller.
I first heard about Strictly Ballroom 3 years ago when a professor of mine told me to watch it. People still to this day tell me it’s a must see. How do you respond to starring in a film that continues to resonate with today’s audience?
I am very humbled and honoured to have been a part of Strictly Ballroom. It is certainly an opportunity that very few people are fortunate enough to get. The fact that it is still being watched around the world and also studied in schools in Australia is fantastic. It is a story that resonates across cultural and ethnic barriers and I see that by the variety of emails I receive from people all over the world. As an actor knowing that something you gave your heart, mind, love and energy still endures 22 years after you made the movie is an incredibly fulfilling and moving experience.
You did a stint as a judge on both Australia and New Zealand’s version of “Dancing With The Stars.” Tell us about that experience, and do you ever watch the US version of the show? [It’s been said that Strictly Ballroom inspired the original “Dancing With the Stars” in the UK: “Strictly Come Dancing.”]
It was certainly an interesting experience to be a judge on Dancing With The Stars in Australia and New Zealand. I was actually offered the job on the first season of Strictly Come Dancing in England but I was busy making a television movie in Australia and couldn’t take the job. I am not a big fan of these reality TV shows, so being a judge on one was a kind of love hate affair. I have never been a big fan of competitive ballroom dancing as it is a sport more so than an art – that is why it is referred to as – Dance Sport. I always felt it had an element of a blood sport about it! I confined my judging to talking about the story, the performance and relationship between the dancers rather than the technique as I am not a ballroom dancer at all – I only trained in ballroom and flamenco for one month prior to shooting the movie. My dance back ground is as a classically trained contemporary ballet dancer. All in all I enjoyed being part of the show but I disliked the negativity that it seemed to thrive on. Eventually after seven series judging the Australian version I was not invited back for the eighth series and was told the reason for that was because I was too nice and too genuine. It disappoints me that that is not a quality a TV show like “Dancing with the Stars” wanted nor encouraged. I continued to judge the New Zealand version as they liked my approach and style until it was rested to make way for Master Chef.
It’s great to see you exploring the many passions in your life, like cooking. How did you cross that bridge from performing to being a celebrity chef?
Well firstly I would say I am not a celebrity chef – I am not a chef by trade nor do I own or run a restaurant. I like to look at it this way I am a bloke that does a bit of cooking on TV. My whole career as a dancer, to a choreographer, to an actor, to a writer, to a TV presenter has always been about and still is about taking people on a journey. It is my mission statement to as far as possible always make that journey a positive and nourishing one that feeds the heart and mind and soul of those that take this journey with me. I take people on a journey by telling a story – wether the language of the story is a ballet, choreography, a character or film role, the written word or a recipe – so essentially I am a story teller and at the moment I am telling stories through food and cooking.
The topic of eating healthy consistently finds itself in the public eye. You and Jenny Craig launched the Healthy Living for Families cookbook. What does eating healthy mean to you?
Healthy eating to me is about balance. Let me say I don’t always get the balance right but I certainly work on it. When I say balance I mean a harmonious balance between, healthy living, healthy eating and happiness. Truth is I probably overindulge in the “what makes me happy” part of that equation and so am always striving to keep the balance between that and what keeps me healthy. I eat well, I exercise, I work to maintain a healthy and positive outlook on life which includes not just the physical but also the mental, emotional and spiritual aspect of living. A lot of people restrict their diets and lifestyle, don’t work on the emotional and spiritual aspects of their lives and then wonder why they are essentially unhappy. There is no “one way” for every one! We are all unique and therefore need to find the best way so that we are happy and healthy.
It caught my eye that you did Australia’s version of “Who Do You Think You Are?” What inspired you to learn more about your family’s history?
When I was asked to be a part of Who Do You Think You Are I was really excited about it but also a bit apprehensive about being part of the program. To make the show work I was aware that I needed to be completely open and vulnerable to the process. That is a very different thing to going on to Ancestor .com and searching your family tree. WDYTYA is a TV program that relies on the main character having an interesting family history and then being prepared to be completely raw and honest in confronting that history. I saw it as a great opportunity to learn more about my family history – and it was – but it was also a telling of one version of my family history as told by a director, an editor and a producer so as to produce a dramatic and interesting TV program. Don’t get me wrong I like the show as seen, it is all true but it may not have been the story I would have told.
Back to the dancing: Ballroom dancing sky rocketed into popularity thanks to shows like “Dancing With The Stars.” As a ballroom dancer myself, I can say it’s been one of the biggest highlights in my life. What benefits do you see in ballroom dancing (or any other form of dance) and why should people try it?
As a young boy doing ballet I was hassled, bullied, abused and also beaten up. It was tough. After Strictly Ballroom hit the cinemas a lot of the same people that bullied, abused and hassled me finally stopped calling me a poofter and started congratulating me. It seemed it was finally okay to be a man and to dance. It had long been a mission of mine to find a way to make it acceptable that a bloke could dance and still be a bloke. I achieved that in such a bigger way than I ever thought possible. I loved that men started to dance wether it was ballroom, ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop etc. There great are benefits in dancing the most obvious being fitness but a husband and wife may rekindle their relationship through dancing together, learning to work together in a way they may never have done or forgotten how they once did. Single people may find a friend, a lover or just a joy from expressing themselves through movement! The great thing with dance is that it asks you to discover yourself in a way that not many other things do – it connects you to your physical and spiritual self. Of course you do not need to know this or understand this it is just what dance in its many forms does and has done since the beginning of time.
You have such a personable and accessible quality about you. Are you the person at the social events that can just strike up conversation with anyone?
Yes and no. I don’t like the social events that much but can do them I much prefer having a beer down the pub and striking up a conversation with whoever is there – dare I say it – people who aren’t there to be seen but just to be happy. Social events can be a little on the vacuous side and therefore the conversations can also be a little of the same although that is a generalisation.
Who are your influences as a performer and who are your influences as a chef?
Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis Junior, Elvis Presley, Shirley Maclaine….the list is long as people who influence you change as you change as a performer and a story teller. Writers like Richard Bach, Krishnamurti, Louisa Hay, Caroline Myst….and lots more. The original Keith Floyd, Rick Stein, Antonnio Carluccio, Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall, Jamie Oliver and more!
Anything you want to say to your supporters?
Thank You so much! I hope I can continue to tell stories that take you on a journey of positive discovery or at the very least that just brings a smile to your day.
Thank you to Paul Mercurio for the lovely interview!

The combination of a snazzy tuxedo, silky smooth voice and killer charismatic personality means one thing. Nope, I’m not talking about JT with his suit and tie. I’m talking about Michael Bublé. The 37 year old musician (and soon to be dad) released his eighth studio record, To Be Loved. To Be Loved shows a sophisticated growth and continued innovation in Buble’s sound. The collection of signature standards and originals are a intelligent display of Buble’s phenomenal skill set as a songwriter and singer.
His lead single, “It’s a Beautiful Day,” is a unique “kiss off” song that’s unexpected from the crooner of love songs. Lyrics like “And even if it started raining/You won’t hear this boy complaining/‘Cause I’m glad that you’re the one who got away” serve as empowering words for anyone who needs that extra “oomph” getting over a nasty break up. The tone is not forced. It naturally feels dance-like and buoyant.
The collaborations serve as a sweet addition to the record. Each duet is so different. There’s a rhythmic beat to Bryan Adam’s number with Bublé. It’s an addicting track that Adams provides with captivating vocals. Reese Witherspoon’s number with Bublé is my favorite. Her softspoken and beautiful voice are the perfect compliment to Bublé’s melodies for an extremely romantic track. Ever since Naturally 7 opened for Bublé on his “Call Me Irresponsible” tour, they’ve been a wonderful force together. The a cappella group’s seamless blend of harmonies don’t make them the supporting role. They truly shine on their own next to Michael’s talents.
The whole album’s Pièce de résistance has to be the unsung heroes. When I saw Bublé live in ‘08, his musicians were world class and they had so much vitality and conviction. They perfectly matched Bublé’s larger than life personality. The brassy horns and scintillating string section all have their moments to shine on this album. They are some of the best instrumentalists around, and it’s no wonder that Michael continues to work with them. Alan Chang is more than just his pianist and musical director. He’s the brilliant co-songwriter behind Bublé’s past hits like “Everything” and “Lost.” Michael thanks him in the credits and rightfully so. The originals have shown growth in Michael’s vocal abilities wonderfully express where Michael is at in his life. The production value is not overdone and really make the primary focus of Bublé’s versatility. Bob Rock does a fantastic job as Bublé’s producer.
Overall, Michael’s innovative album is a perfect thesis for his artistic sound. He maintains that signature standard sound he grew up with but tries new things. Bublé shows again that he pushes his boundaries as a musician. To Be Loved is definitely worth the investment. If he comes to a town near you, GO SEE HIM! You’ll get a great set of singing mixed with hilarious comedy and a marvelous night of entertainment. For an eighth studio album, Buble’s compilation shows the world what it’s like To Be Loved.

“Dancing With The Stars” Pros Tristan MacManus and Witney Carson dance to The Band Perry’s “Better Dig Two” (Photo Courtesy of ABC)
“Dancing With The Stars” fans had heavy hearts when pro dancer Tristan MacManus made a pre-mature departure with his partner Dorthy Hamill this season. On week 5 Tristan made his return with Head Judge Len Goodman’s side – by – side challenge. The DWTS coveted pro talks about the side – by – side challenge, gives some words of wisdom for the remaining contestants, and even reveals what he would do if given a “Disney” theme week.
1. You had the opportunity to do two side by side routines on week 5. One with Chelsie, Sean and Peta and another one with Emma, Victor and Lindsey. What were your first thoughts of the challenge, and what was the rehearsal process like?
I enjoyed it. I was looking forward to helping out and working with other couples on the show. It’s always hard to still feel part of the season when you go so early. It was great to come back in a similar capacity. The rehearsal process wasn’t as rigorous for us joining couples as there was time restrictions put on what we could do. Each couple got four hours to work with the competing couples as well. It’s very easy to just come in and try take over, which I made sure I didn’t do. We watched, and then when we were asked we gave our input. I liked giving a guy’s perspective to the celebs to give them something else to relate to.
2. The competition is getting fierce now that we’ve passed the halfway point. What’s your advice to the couples there now? How can they cope with the even more difficult weeks ahead?
No advice really to be honest, just not to let it get to them too much. Remember why you are there and use that to keep you happy. I think everyone is doing great I don’t know how quickly each person picks things up, but if they can pick up the chore as quick as possible then its just repetition and do the best you can.
3. We love seeing you in the pro numbers and “dance assists” for the musical guests! If you had to bring on your dream musician/band to perform for a results show who would you bring?
I enjoy dancing to the muscial acts, but I can’t really say who I’d like to perform to. I love listening to them play when they come on, so thats what I prefer doing like when Kiss came on, and The script and groups like that. I’d love Mumford and Sons or The Lumineers to come on, but again I’d prefer to listen to them play rather then dance to them. I love the band Van Hoorn as well. They are cool. I’m biased, but I really like their music.
4. Is there any pro on the show with whom you haven’t danced with that you’d like to? If so what style of dance would you choose?
I think I’ve danced with everyone on the show at some stage. I couldn’t pick. Everyone is so unique in their ways. I enjoyed dancing with Emma and Witney last week, because I had never danced with them before. I’ve rehearsed with them before, but never performed with them so that was fun. They are both super girls and really fun to work with for the week. I’d like to do some ballroom with Anna. She is great to dance with.
5. DWTS has been known to have some awesome (and sometimes crazy) theme weeks. If DWTS did a Disney week, what Disney song would you choose to dance to?
Disney has so many classics, it’s hard to choose. I love the songs in “Aladdin” – “One Jump Ahead” and “Friend Like Me.” I think “Do Right” from “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” is a classic as well. I wanted to dance to it with Pam (Anderson). I thought that character would have been great for her – Jessica Rabbit and the long red hair but it didn’t work out.
6. Has the show been too focused on making the numbers so epic in the production value that it’s lost a little bit of the focus on the actual dancing?
I don’t think the production takes away from the dancing, because we still do all the dancing while the number is going on. Maybe just sometimes the producers focus on something else during the taping. I like the bigger numbers and I like how different they can be. Sometimes everything gets a bit “samey,” so a change is needed and I think thats what they are trying to do. We as dancers can dance, but the reality is what they want to show is up to them.
7. If there was one word to describe your journey with Dorothy what would it be?
Short or disappointing (but in the sense that we had so much to give and it didnt work out).
8. Last time you were asked in an interview, you said your favorite dances were The Waltz and The Rumba? Would you still say those were your favorite Ballroom and Latin dance?
I don’t think anything has happened to change my mind. I still love both dances but I like all dances with stories, so it was just off the top of my head- I like the intimate emotional stories.
9. You pride yourself in teaching, and rightfully so. You’re a gifted teacher. Besides patience, what have you found to be some effective teaching tools/technique when it comes to dance?
Teaching I find to be an amazing thing. I like to pass on information, and I love opening my mind to new information. I think the common ground is relation, and how you relate one thing to another. If you know what points you want to get across, you need to know different ways to explain it and you need to listen to whoever you are teaching to decide how you want to teach. That’s the easiest way I find. I often used to just take literally everything I was told and if I liked it I’d never forget it, but if it didn’t interest me it was hard to keep in my brain. So, I started relating it to things I did like – maybe not the way I was taught it, but the way I would remember it. I think everyone is different but we all remember what we want to- otherwise you can just go read the book and be told what to do!!
Thank you Tristan for the interview! Always a pleasure, and hopefully we’ll continue to see you on S16.

Meet Gleb Savchenko – new “Dancing With The Stars” pro, Lisa Vanderpump (“Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”)’s partner, and yes resident DWTS Man Candy. Ladies don’t be fooled though. Gleb’s got an illustrious career in addition to his steamy and ruggedly good looks. Gleb won his first major dance title at the age of 11. He became a professional Latin and Ballroom dancer at 24, going on to win a slew of championship titles (i.e. Australian South Pacific Championship, Canberra Open Professional Championship and the United Kingdom Championship). Savchenko also modeled for high profile names such as Calvin Klein, GQ Fashion, Hugo Boss, and Cosmopolitan. Not only does Gleb hold exceptional modeling and dancing credits to his name, he received his Master’s Degree from GITIS’s Russian Theatre Arts University. He also studied drama at the Moscow Theatre Arts University. It’s apparent that Gleb’s a multi-talented and multi-faceted gentleman. So, if Gleb wasn’t a dancer what would he be doing? Are there any tricks up his sleeve for the season? What’s it like to work with Lisa? Savchenko dishes the details in our interview.
What was your first reaction to the news of becoming a “Dancing With the Stars” pro?
My first reaction was oh my goodness, this is absolutely awesome and a real dream come true for me! I love being a part of this show, it is such an honor!
You’ve represented places like Latvia and Hong Kong. Is there any particular country that is near and dear to your heart as a dancer?
I have lived in many places around the world. Russia, Sydney, New York, Hong Kong and now Los Angeles. When I was 20, I moved from Russia to New York and it was some of the best times of my life! I moved to New York, all by myself and it was one of the best times of my life. I developed some deep and lifelong friendships. I also love Sydney, Australia – it is such a beautiful country. It’s funny, because I have lived in so many places in the world and I have had such great experiences in all places I have lived. When I am in LA, sometimes, I miss Sydney. When I am in Sydney, I miss Russia. When I am in Russia – I miss Hong Kong and so on. I get attached to places because of the memories that are created there. I do love my hometown Moscow, where I was born – I grew up there, I know every single corner, every coffee shop, every bar, – the familiarity of Moscow is very comfortable to me.
The audience saw that you had chemistry with your partner, Lisa, from the moment you two met. What’s the working relationship been like with her?
Working with Lisa is great. We have a very good relationship. There is great chemistry between us and when two people start dancing with each other, a friendship develops fast. I think Lisa and myself will be friends for life. Trust between us has been developed. When you are on the dance floor, you have to trust each other; you have to believe in each other. I believe in Lisa. I believe she can go far in this competition. We have a great friendship.
You’ve been a seasoned champion in both Latin and Ballroom dancing. What’s your favorite Latin dance and what’s your favorite ballroom style?
I do love all Latin dances. My favorite dance is usually the one I am working / choreographing at the moment. I like the elegant classy dances.
Can the audience expect something surprising from you and Lisa?
The audience probably wont expect us to do anything too shocking. I always try to push Lisa to the limit, and push her past her comfort zone. The audience should expect anything – we can do ANYTHING!
You’ve done a variety of things ranging from modeling, acting, and singing in addition to your career as a dancer. If you weren’t a dancer what would your ultimate dream job be?
I think if I wasn’t dancing, I would like to be a military pilot. I still have the thought of getting my pilot license at some stage. That would be awesome.
How has the rest of the professional dancers from “DWTS” welcomed you?
All of the dancers have been so great and so welcoming. I find this new family, so warm and supportive. I have made a lot of great new friends and have cemented some of the friendships I had before with some of the dancers I knew before I was on the show. Everyone has been so kind and supportive, they don’t hesitate to help. Not only have the dancers been supportive, but the crew and the celebrities have really been wonderful towards me, I love the DWTS family.
Is there any dance you’re looking forward to performing with Lisa?
I am looking forward to the dances, where Lisa can open up a little bit more – to show her personality a little bit more and I think her strengths is going to be the soft elegant dances. I cant wait to keep dancing – Viennese Waltz, Rumba, etc.
In your six word memoir, describe your life as a dancer.
Happy, Traveller, Exhausting, Passionate, Creative, Fit.
Thanks for the interview, Gleb! It was great to learn about you, and we look forward to more dances from you on the show.

Justin Timberlake releases his third record on March 19th after a 7 year hiatus. Listeners might think the #JustinTimberweek on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, early iTunes streaming, and SNL hosting might be overkill in the promo department. The record justifies the already present sensation. The 20/20 Experience proves that it’s not always about how many records you can crank out, rather it’s the quality of the record you present to the audience.
The Social Media Buzz is Legit: In January, a big social media explosion centered around the infamous JT return to the music. With a simple link to a video posted on tumblr, the artist revealed that contrary to popular belief, he wasn’t done with music.
I’m the one that sits and is obsessive about it before you even get to hear it. As close as I get to it, I don’t think I can physically torture myself that much, year in and year out, and expect it to fulfill me the way that it does and the way that it is right now. I don’t wanna put anything out that I don’t love. – JT
The normal mentality of the music industry would be Let’s put out as many records as we can, have as many tours as we can to promote those records (ticket sales, merch, etc. with a tour), and let’s see how much money we can bring with all this musical material. I appreciate the fact that JT didn’t release his work for monetary sake. In the Top 40 world full of “Call Me Maybe”s and “Harlem Shake”s, we need an artist who won’t put dubstep or auto-tune on a track for the sake of a sale or chart-topper. Without a lick of auto-tune or dubstep, Timberlake reminds us of his signature R&B/Soul flavor with a spice of Timberlake pop splash.
The Buzz-Worthy Record: Justin kicks off the album with a suave and seductive “Pusher Love Girl.” The track is reminiscent of old sounds like “My Love” (Futuresex/Lovesounds), but presents a strong claim that Timberlake comes back harder with a more mature sound. The production value is exceptionally noteworthy. The mixing of vocal harmonies and hypnotic drum beats create a pleasurable aural experience. JT teams up with established hitmaker, Timbaland as well as Jerome “J Rock” Harmon (Timbaland, Chris Cornell, Chris Brown).
“Let The Groove In” shows JT’s panache for combining R&B and Latin beats (“Senorita”: Justified). It’s “I want to spin you on the salsa club floor” sexy. The track is invigoratingly different from all the cacophonous club noise on the radio.
Timberlake’s pinacle and epic piece has to be “Mirrors.” After a series of smooth, euphoric and ear-pleasing tracks, Justin gets real and honest.
Cause with your hand in my hand and a pocket full of soul
I can tell you there’s no place we couldn’t go
Just put your hand on the past, I’m here tryin’ to pull you through
You just gotta be strong
The lyrics aren’t only romantic and poignant, but we can definitely tell that Timberlake feels like he found something treasured with his wife, Jessica Biel. The acoustic hook after the bridge is a hand-clapping, foot-stomping celebration of love and something not only musically beautiful but also symbolically beautiful.
It’s no surprise critics and music lovers predict a Grammy 2014 sweep for The 20/20 Experience. Timberlake and Team JT prove their innovation without losing the signature JT sound. Platinum producer Clive Davis (Whitney Houston, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen) gave his seal of approval on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” Timberlake’s more than just a man in a “Suit & Tie.” With charismatic vocals, funky and soul-oozing beats and catchy music production, Timberlake’s a talent legacy.
Bliss describes my sentiments when I dance. Every dancer has his or her own reason for dancing. For me — I fell in love with it. I could never place dance above my family, but I love it dearly. Seeing how every other word has been “dance” lately for me — I wanted to share my story with others. My main goal is to show people that if they find that piece of happiness… they should cherish it and never give it up. From youth to my adult life, dance (like my family) has never left me.
I had my first samples of dance in 7th grade. They wanted kids at my middle school to try different things and meet new people. They created “clusters” or clubs we could choose to join. I saw ballroom dance on the list and had no idea what it was. Instead of getting crafty or learning a sport — I decided Ballroom Dancing looked like fun.
It was like finding the world’s best bowl of ice cream and not wanting to be done with it. Every time we met up, I had a great amount of excitement and 20 minutes was way too short.
When I moved to Norman in 2002, it was a rough period. My family had to adjust to a new city, and it was just really difficult for me to belong. My mom saw an ad for (out of all things) Irish Dancing. (Asian girl Irish Dancing say wha? haha) But getting back into dancing was really joyful. Unfortunately Irish dancing didn’t last too long, but it did remind me how much I missed dancing.
I had this ambitious goal my senior year of high school to start a ballroom dance club. Everyone doubted me, but I wanted to show people that they should follow through with their passions. After getting an advisor to watch our sessions — I gathered a group of kids and started teaching them my little knowledge I knew of ballroom. To be honest, all I really knew was watching podcasts that head judge on DWTS, Len Goodman, put out weekly. I had no professional training and yes it was quite silly of me to teach people if I had no idea what I was doing. Within a matter of months the club saw a poignant end. It was hard for me to see it go. However, it taught me a lot about learning how to lead and carefully planning ambitious things out before executing them.
There was a major hiatus in my dancing career. The winter before my junior year of college I stumbled upon a video of the now renowned dancer from “Glee” – Harry Shum Jr. The joy that you saw in his face when you dance — that was what I felt from dancing. Seeing that gave me the courage to try dancing again after a very long break. So I signed up for “Intro to Ballroom” at OU. Hands down — one of the best collegiate courses I have taken thus far.
Dancing at OU was phenomenal — both on the social side and academic side. Actually having professional training (instead of watching podcasts) allowed me to see what it was like to take an actual dance class. I met a handful of people from all different parts of the country and world. We learned about partnerships and socializing with others. The highlight came towards the end of my class. On a whim, I decided to partner up with a friend and compete in my class’ swing dance competition. It was hard to believe that we scared off a few people from competing. My partner and I had two totally different views. I wanted to have fun and show everyone my love of dance — he wanted to win. To this day I’m proud to say that we made through 2 rounds of competition (even fought a wardrobe malfunction) and took home 1st place. Winning wasn’t everything to me. It was knowing that someone respected my love of dance enough to give me a high honor. That feeling that someone can see your personality shine through meant the world to me.
It’s strange that after such a high I didn’t dance for a while. I visited our local studio once, but I didn’t formally dance for the longest time. It took another marvelous dancer to really get my heart connected back into dance. That dancer was Tristan MacManus. You can hear all about my stories on how he touched my life in my blog. However, words really can’t express how happy I am that he lead me back into ballroom. I’m so grateful now that I have a studio to study from and to continue growing as a dancer. I tell people if I could bottle that bliss and joy I feel from dancing and sell it to the world — I would. There’s nothing like it. If it wasn’t for Tristan I wouldn’t be as in love with the Shall We Dance? Studio as I am now. Going frequently showed me what a friendly and warm crowd of dancers they are. They’re very much like a family and I’m so glad I got to be a part of it.
As you can see… I’ve might of taken a break or two. But like Tristan, taking those breaks made me realized how much dancing has been a staple in my life. If this massive essay/novel has taught you anything — it’s that you can’t deny your heart what really makes you happy. Go for it! Do what you love because that truly is what life is built upon. To end this I want to say find your passion, and for my fellow dancers — keep a dance in your feet and keep a dance in your heart.
I know it’s been kind of quiet since we interviewed Tristan on our show. That’s all about to change! We’re about to be busy bees over here at “DWTS: Behind The Curtain.”
January 20th 3PM PST – We tentatively (that’s because we still have to see if he competes that day or not) have honorary Troupe member and featured DWTS dancer Armen Way. He’s danced on the show in such numbers as the Pam Anderson finale number with Tristan and the amazing MJ tribute number. Armen was also a dancer in DWTS: Live in Las Vegas. So we’ll be able to talk about that! So excited.
February 10th 3PM PST - The fabulous Kristyn Burtt who hosts the AfterBuzz TV DWTS show will join us for a “The View” styled round table discussion. We’ll talk about EVERYTHING for Season 16. From the possibility of new judges to which pros are returning, who will be the new pros and of course the big one… Which stars will be in the cast! The talk will be fierce, real and of course fun!
February 17th - From the DWTS Troupe, the magnificent Sharna Burgess will talk to us about her career, the show and tons more! We’re lucky to have such a gorgeous, talented and brilliant dancer on our show. She’ll have plenty to discuss as far as DWTS. Come join us!
February 24th 3PM PST - Another lovely Troupe dancer Sasha Farber will give his insights to who he thinks should be a part of the cast (which will be announced on Feb. 28th), how his tour with Ballroom With A Twist went and more! Farbs is one of my absolute favorites. He’s a sweetheart and such a fabulous dancer.
As you can see we have a lot to look forward to! We’d love for you to join us! Please tweet me (@stephlpham) with any questions you have for the pros or our special roundtable with Kristyn. We’d love to include any pre-show questions to add onto the live discussion. You can even comment on this post and I’ll make sure they’re a part of the show!
Thanks for all of your support! It’s been nothing but fun. See you at the show!
Tristan sat down with us here at “Dancing With The Stars: Behind The Curtain” to talk about his career, his insights on the show, and his upcoming fundraiser in Jersey.
Thank you to Tristan for the interview. It was a pleasure, and we look forward to having you on the show again!
Also a big thank you to these great sources of #DWTS news for publishing our interview!
Join me for another installment of “Dancing With The Stars: Behind The Curtain” with special guest: Tristan MacManus.
My co-hosts (Maria and Jennifer) will be talking to Tristan about what he’s up to in the off season, his upcoming fundraiser event in Jersey, and what’s to come on S16 of DWTS.
Join us for some fun times and remember you can always click on the actual video of the interview and comment with your questions. Can’t wait to see you there! Really looking forward to this.
There’s been a whole lot of ungratefulness lately. Not only seeing it in myself but others too. It’s hard to ignore the daily struggles. Though we must remember that someone else’s circumstance may be much harsher than ours. One must move on beyond the negative thinking. Negativity is a powerful force. Instead of pondering on the negative, the new year should be spent in doing and thinking positively.
This year I was lucky. I hosted a contest with one of my biggest role models (Pip from “The Voice”) and I interviewed my favorite dancer (Tristan MacManus). Above all of that, one of the best things this year was watching my dad walk down the aisle and accept his diploma. It taught me a major life lesson.
Was going to work, raising a family and going to school a risk? Yes. Was it hard? You bet. He didn’t let that stop him though. He took chances and followed through to get his degree. That kind of determination… no matter how long it took taught me a big lesson to stick with it and go after my dreams.
My Phamily’s my rock and in 2013, I hope we all do BIGGER, BETTER and more AMAZING things bigger than we’ve hoped for. I love you guys.
My message to all of you: Dare to dream. And like Nike says, “Just Do it.” There’s a favorite quote of mine from Strictly Ballroom. It goes, “A life lived in fear is a life half lived.” Next year, don’t fear – live. Cheers and may 2013 be BIGGER than all your dreams you have.
Come join me and my panel of co-hosts as we chat with “Dancing With The Stars” fan favorite – Sasha Farber! It’s the off season, but Sasha will be very busy in the upcoming months. We’ll talk about gigs (like Ballroom With A Twist), what he thinks will happen on Season 16 and plenty more! It should be fun. And as always, you can join us in the audience chat in the YouTube link provided. Get ready with some questions and we hope to see you there!
When you bond over a favorite artist, band or performer with someone it can be a joyous experience. When people take that experience and put down others – that’s when I draw the line. I saw someone last night ”defending” one of my favorite performers when she clearly had clouded judgement. This so called “fan” was verbally harassing others and acting as if it was perfectly ok. I don’t know if she’s watched the news recently, but cyber bullying is something that I am highly against. It harms so much more than people can ever understand. Being a fan should mean supporting not only the artists but others in the fan community.
I have been a part of several fan communities. From TV shows, to boy bands to dancers – I’ve seen everything. I witnessed the sweethearts ranging all the way up to the crazies on the fan scale. Even though I’ve seen some bad things there are pros to joining a group of fans.
One of the best fan bases I’ve been lucky to be involved with are the Pipsters. I have yet to see them get catty with each other. They really take their friendships to heart and lead by Pip’s example of being kind to one another. That’s what fan bases should be about. And as someone who had the lucky opportunities that I have, I am thankful for the people who support rather that tear someone down.
So my message to anyone who reads this: We love all forms of entertainment because it unites us. Sure, some fans are going to see the spotlight more than others but that doesn’t mean we can’t do our part in helping the fan bases we love grow. The only crown to the “best fan” out there is a metaphorical one. Let’s end the cyber bullying and remember why we love music, art or any other platform in the first place – because it brings people together. Spread the love and I promise you, it’ll come back.
We’re about 81 days away from the Season 16 premiere of “Dancing With The Stars!” If YouTube clips of past seasons or cast speculation isn’t fulfilling your withdrawals, maybe this will announcement will help!
For now, “Google Hangouts: The DWTS Pros edition” will be on hiatus until January.
Nothing’s officially confirmed YET, but I’m working with Tristan MacManus, Sasha Farber, Anna Trebunskaya to get you guys Hangouts for January and February. My goal is to make these Hangouts successful enough that it’ll carry on throughout the season.
It’s been an honor speaking with these talented pros, and I love hearing from their perspective.
Thank you to everyone who’s supported me on this journey. My panel of co-hosts and I thank you and we look forward to bringing you more Google Hangouts in the future!
Keep Dancing,
Steph
Please keep on the lookout and I will notify you with more details as they come! Excited to keep this going for you!
Ba, Mom, Vy, and Val I know you guys probably won’t see this, but I love you all. It’s rare to see an Asian family support their children to do whatever THEY want to do. Thanks for the laughs, the tears, the interviews and the wonderful memories. Keep on dancing and I’ll be blessed to support you all.
If you’re not mentioned don’t think it was intentional. It’d take all day to say how truly blessed I am to have such a wonderful group of people in my life. 2012 was nothing short of a fantastic year and 2013 will be even better. There’s graduation, moving onto the “real world” with a job (hopefully) and so much more excitement. Thank you ALL for a very crazy, but phenomenal year. It was one of the best years in my life. Cheers. Have a Merry Christmas and have a better new Year.

This gentleman and I share a lot of the same principals. One principal that we both believe in: “Family Over Everything.” Everyone who knows me knows how much I love my “Phamily” and friends. They’ve inspired me to surround myself with others who motivate me in the same positive light. That’s why I’m so grateful to have found a role model in one incredible gentleman: Tristan MacManus.
Even if I received my inductee card into the “Tristan Troupe” a little late, that does not change how amazing this journey has been.
On September 17, I was up at 1 Am trying my hardest to sleep but couldn’t. I reminisced and looked up some clips of dancer that stuck out in my mind — Tristan. Since I was writing a script that night I thought if I were to ever cast this character – he would be him. Little did I know, that night would change my life.
Out of a shot in the dark, I asked Tristan if he would like to do an interview for my site (see interview here: http://wp.me/p16YJC-m2 ). He graciously agreed and I could not believe it. He took a chance on a freelance journalist he did not even know.
That interview is one of the most humbling and honoring interviews I conducted in my 10 year career as a journalist. He took a chance on a dreamer and made one of my dreams come true.
He also motivated me to go back to the dance studio. Ever since, I’ve been making it to the dance studio whenever I can. Dance has been a major staple in my life. I formally became a ballroom dancer my junior year of college — finishing off that year a swing dance champion. Returning on the dance floor gave me a joy that is inexpressible. Hopefully, no matter what happens in life I can keep dancing.
Tristan, in the off chance that you read this I seriously cannot say thank you enough. You brought me one of my biggest career honors, you inducted me into an incredible group of friends with the Tristan Troupe (S/O to my divas Gail, Jennifer and Travis ) and you took my heart to happiness with dancing.
I am so honored that you let me enter your life. You are a gentleman of the highest standards and have one of the kindest hearts I have ever seen. Your wise and sage words gave me that daily “oomph” to keep me going. You give back and honor your family in such a tremendous way, I only hope I can do the same one day.
Carol (Tristan’s mum), you are an angel. I appreciate the follow more than you’ll know. You raised one of the world’s most classiest and sweetest men. Thank you for your kindess, I only hope to give your family it back.
Tristan, it’s been a dream of mine for a while to dance with you. I only hope it can come true. You say your mission in life is to inspire one person to take that inspiration and spread it unto others. Well, Tristan you inspired me and my dancing feet has hopefully done the same. Stay kind and talented. You’ll always be my “lucky charm.”
Hey Dancing With The Stars fans! Hope that the DWTS withdrawals haven’t drove you too crazy! Season 16 is only 102 days away, but who’s counting, right?
You’ll see that the latest DWTS interview I did was with Troupe member (hopefully soon to be pro) Henry Byalikov. It was a lot fun, and I hope you check it out. Here are some big news.
We aren’t the sure of the exact date yet, but Anna Trebunskaya has agreed to do a Google Hangout with me! We’ll get her insights on what’s to come on S16, what she thought of All-Stars and of course details on her event in Toronto come this February.
The Google Hangout will happen in January (which I know seems like a far ways away). We want everyone to come with questions to ask her.
PS one of Anna’s DWTS mates might stop by! A certain “Lucky Charm” guest if we’re lucky. No promises though.
So, please keep your calendars open and I will keep you updated as more information comes.
Thanks for all your support on my work with the DWTS. On my site you’ll find a few more DWTS interviews, and a reel I made for Tristan MacManus.
If you missed it my co-hosts Jennifer, Maria and I chatted with “Dancing With The Stars” Troupe member Henry Byalikov. He was extremely gracious and we had so much fun. Thanks to the #Henryettes who showed up! Thank you, Henry! Hope you go pro Season 16! Cheers
So, I was thinking that I have yet to see a reel for my favorite pro on “Dancing With The Stars” – Tristan MacManus. Reels are important, because they show your best work in a short and concise manner. Especially in entertainment. So, enjoy! Tell me what you think!
As we sit all gleeful with satisfied and happy tummies, I offer my humble offering of thanks.
Near the end of last year was a challenging time. When the new year came I made a promise to myself to make 2012 a great year. Well, my friends… It’s not been a great year – it’s been exceptional.
My Phamily – They’ve seen me through everything and stayed by my side. This was the year that my dad graduated, my little sister started high school, and my older sister and started our last year of college. Through thick and thin, we’ve been though a lot. Mom, dad sisters and all… I’m truly thankful that they have been such an astounding group of people I am lucky and humble enough to call my Phamily.
School/Work - Thankful for my education and work is an understatement. Even though academics can prove to be tough, having the opportunity to work and meet the people I do is pretty humbling and gratifying.
This year my career changed completely. From interviewing some really phenomenal people to even hosting a contest with Pip. Doing Bowtie Ambassadors was a life changing experience. The best part was that in some small way, I was a part of letting a wonderful group of girls share their story of being a marvelous fan family. Thank you Arnold Clan, Pip and Pipsters. You made my summer, and you made my year.
Interviewing Tristan MacMans (pro dancer from “Dancing With The Stars”) was a whirlwind and incredible. He’s an absolute gentleman and so gracious. He gave me the chance to interview a one of my idols, and he gave me back the gift of dance. After we interviewed, I visited a local studio again to get back into ballroom. Dance is a passion in mine and I hope that no matter how long I live, I hope to keep it alive.
Oh, did I mention I’ll get to interview Henry Byalikov (DWTS Troupe member) and I had the honor of interviewing Anna Trebunskaya (DWTS pro). Yes, I am one lucky girl.
This year was amazing. It’s impossible to thank everyone who’s touched my life. I’ve met so many great people this year. So, to you reading this: It doesn’t matter if I’ve known for a year long or hell if you just stumbled on this post, you all helped me grow as a person. This has been one hell of a year. Remember, life’s not about how much you spend in money, it’s how much you spend in thought. Spend your thought in others, but remember to think positively about yourself. Much love, Cheers, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Who doesn’t remember seeing that iconic and fierce expression on MJ’s face opening up on “Bad” the short film (yes, as many of you know it was a short film in addition to the music video) that Scorsese worked his golden magic on?
Now, even though I’m not an 80s kid, being a music lover it was impossible for Jackson’s Bad record not to touch my life in some form. My mother was a Jackson fan, so of course it rubbed off on me.
My Favorite Track
Why is this my favorite track? It’s completely dynamic. It tells a story, there’s conflict, there’s flair and it’s completely Jackson. The production value and the arrangement are incomparable. That catchy bass line hits you in the gut. Jackson’s fast-paced singing in the verses resembling anxiousness. This isn’t one of your records today for sure. This has instrumentation. This has finesse, and this is a solid hit. The music video. What was so great about this record was that it wasn’t aurally of high standard, it was so visually captivating. These music videos were like mini-films. They really did convey a story to the audience. He hit the choreography, the cinematography and the editing just right. And let’s not forget that slow-mo lean that is so infamous.
What This Record Will Leave
It’s been 25 years, but these records are still as fresh today as they were then. The heart-stopping drum intro in “The Way You Make Me Feel” – “Dun, Dun, Dun.. Duh Duh, Duh, Duh…” The thumping bass line, and the whole record had a host full of hits. Like the aggressive “Dirty Diana,” the sensual “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.” Who isn’t a fan of “Man In The Mirror?” That song makes you really reflect… and how often does a song do that today? Not often with the Top 40 we’re pushing out. MJ’s records are legendary. It’s our job to keep it that way. Make sure that the next generation knows how one individual revolutionized the music industry. MJ’s “Bad” will always remind me that you work hard to make something a success. So, when he asks, “Who’s Bad,” the answer is he isn’t: He’s iconic.
It’s a complete and humbling honor to host a chat with “Dancing With The Stars” very own Henry Byalikov! Known worldwide as a dynamic and charismatic dancer, he continues to have a fruitful career. He recently helped Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani receive a perfect score for their trio Paso Doble. It’ll be a fun session so come one come and come all! We will let you know the time as the date approaches! Go ahead and bookmark the address above and we’ll see you there!
1man·i·fes·to noun \ˌma-nə-ˈfes-(ˌ)tō\ - a written statement declaring publicly the intentions, motives, or views of its issuer
Walt Disney said, “All out dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” In this struggling economy, it seems like courage is hard to come by. History proved that in strife, the strongest people have come out them. After viewing Jubilee Project’s “Dear Daniel” (see previous post for link), I knew what I wanted to write: The Passion of a Dream.
The Passion of A Dream Manifesto
Everyone experiences others doubting their dreams, or doubt in themselves. Today that stops. Life’s too short not to chase after a dream. The key is to start taking action and start right now…
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask/Do
A lot of people have this mentality that asking for something looks week. The reality is it’s ok to ask! It sounds hard… but life lessons are learned by taking risks. You have to build up the courage to chase after what your desires.
Believe in Yourself
The job market scares everyone, but we can’t let that stop us. We have to remember this nation has seen war, economic depression, and a hosts of tragic events. Beyond that, other countries around the world deal with life-threatening struggles on a daily basis. It’s all about perspective. Take a look inside of you. You are wonderful. Even if I don’t know you, I still think you have the potential to do whatever.
Work Hard
It took Edison thousands of attempts before getting the lightbulb correct. You have to work hard to earn that respect and credibility. Compliment that belief, and make a pledge to work hard each day.
No More Negativity
Now, I’m guilty of thinking negatively. I can’t block it out entirely, but I choose to not let it stop me. I’m going to do what I love, and the paycheck does not matter a bit. As long as I can survive, and give back to my family that has supported me I am happy. Whenever you lose hope, or someone tells you that you can’t do something, it’s your opportunity to say, “No. I can do it. If I fail, I tried and that’s more than anyone can ask for.” Bullying hurts so many. We lose too many good people in this world, all thanks to something so dark and destructive. Have courage to stand up for yourself. The first step in changing the world is to change yourself.
It doesn’t take something big to change the world. It starts with one person, and then becomes a movement. You don’t have to help out a mass crowd. All it takes is for you to believe in yourself – and the desire to inspire at least one other person.
I, Stephanie Pham, hereby declare the Passion of A Dream Manifesto in effect. May the dreamers continue to dream, and may everyone inspire each other.
The short film “Dear Daniel” captured in 20 minutes, what I have experienced my 22 years of life. In fact, every Asian American at least once has experienced the film’s subject.
The protagonist John Lee narrates the tale of his journey of becoming a lawyer. Trouble is, that’s not what he really wants. He wants to be a filmmaker. If you know anything about the Asian community, being a filmmaker is one of the most far left field things any Asian parent wants their child doing. They want their children to have successful, highly respected jobs that bring in the nice paychecks. Like the mother in the film states, “We take care of you, so you take care of us.” However, the reality is that upon the millions of Asian Americans out there, they are just like John. They don’t want to be a lawyer, doctor or engineer. They want to change the world their own way.
The film tackles the ever constant issue in such an articulate way. The writing is brilliant. You see John’s struggle. The audience see the obstacles he faces in his attempts at pursuing his dreams not his parents. The cinematography is beautiful and organic. It captures the story in a real and honest way.
But what I find the best part about this film is that it is so relatable. Being a young Asian American woman, I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard “no.” It definitely made work harder after my own goals. I’ll never forget when one of my classmates looked me in the eye and told me “Steph, you’ll never make it to your dream job.” Those words hurt, but in the end I did what I always do. I turned haterade into powerade — any doubt became fuel for me to not to prove every disbeliever wrong, but to do my dreams for me and for nobody else.
Every Asian American should see this film. Not only every Asian American, but everyone who has had anyone tell them that they can’t pursue a dream. Because anyone who says that doesn’t believe in themselves, and they like to see others fail. Everyone has the right to a dream. Dreams are our passion in life, and we can’t take for granted.
I think it’s so bold that you left your schools and jobs to pursue the Jubilee Project fulltime. It’s bold, but it’s brave. You’re doing something so worthwhile, because you’re touching lives. Thank you for inspiring us to dream. Dare to dream, and dare to make those dreams come true.
I am proud (and excited) to announce that Aubrey Logan will be my first guest on my show! We’ll be talking about one of her current projects: Protosong, upcoming gigs, and more. This will be fun so please come and ask questions. You can send in either text or live questions while you’re there. We’d love to have Aubrey answer some. She’ll also be performing, so please come hang out with us!

Anna and Drew jive away on the second week of ‘Dancing With Stars’ All Stars – Image Credit belongs to ABC
Sabrina Bryan may be the ‘firecracker’ back in the ballroom this season, but she’s not the only sparkler back on the floor. Anna Trebunskaya joins the all-star cast as the pro component to Team TreLachey (Dew Lachey of the Season 2 champ alum). Many know she has the skills, but just who is Anna Trebunskaya? Anna began dancing at the early age of 6, thanks to her parents who were instructors. The following year she snagged her first competition win at age 7! When she was seventeen, she came to the states from Russia with her parents. Training and competing more, she became a finalist out of 300 people at the biggest ballroom dance competition – Blackpool (Rising Star Latin Championship). Anna is known for her many appearances as a professional on the hit show ‘Dancing With The Stars.’ Her husband Jonathan Roberts has been a pro fan favorite as well. What’s this season been like with Drew? How does she keep so fit, and what was it like being under the red light in week one? Keep reading to find out!
1. Anna, there are a lot of changes to the show since the first season. What has been the biggest learning curve for you?
I came in to ‘DWTS ‘ in season 2 as competitive ballroom/latin dancer. Back then it was more “pure” , more about stars learning how to dance and improving. Being technical was really rewarded. Now the show is more theatrical, with more special effects. All of us Pros had to adjust to the changes. I like it – makes me a more rounded performer.
2. Week one was a huge testament to the fact that no one is safe from being in jeopardy — even a champion. Does that ‘what doesn’t kill you make you stronger’ mentality strengthen the rehearsal process?
It was a little bit of a “wake up” call. Drew and I always worked hard, but this experience made us a stronger focused team. We don’t take anything for granted.
3. You have an impressive list of accomplishments, including a Rising Star Latin finalist at the world’s largest ballroom dance competition, Blackpool. What do you consider your biggest achievement both on and off the dance floor?
I really enjoyed competing internationally and representing the USA. Becoming 2nd in Blackpool is one of my career highlights. On the bigger scale, I could never have imagined moving to America and becoming a dancer on national TV.
4. Hypothetical situation: The theme for the week is Disney Film and Movies (since ABC’s owned by Disney). What would YOUR choice of song and dance be and why?
Well, people have compared me with Ariel from “The little mermaid.” So, it would have to be “Under the sea.” Now Drew’s favorite song is ” True to your heart” from Mulan, cause he sang it.
5. There has been plenty of talks over the years of one of the seasons allowing one or a few ‘average Janes and Joes’ to dance with the pros — making YOU the dancers the stars. Would you ever consider doing that season, or would it be a ratings tank for the network?
I’m glad I don’t have to make those decisions. I would dance with whoever just cause I love it.
6. Health is a growing concern in the US. You are a very active person complimenting your dancing regiment. What are your passions for health and fitness, and what advice can you give others who are looking into bettering their health?
I do a little bit of everything : yoga, gyrotonic, cardio, and resistance training. I mix and match. My advice would be to make exercising as part of your schedule, make it a habit to exercise .
7. In dance, there’s a running joke of hoping to find ‘the perfect partner.’ You lucked out, because you not only danced with him, you married him! What’s it like to be married to Jonathan?
It’s great. Thank you.
8. You and Drew have a great partner relationship! What has been the best part of having Drew as a partner?
He is very creative, has a great sense of humor and hard working. It’s also wonderful to have his family’s support. I love being his partner.

Imagine the End of Summer barbecue on ‘Music Makers’ lane: You might see Pitbull serve up some margaritas as he looks for his next collaboration, Miss Carly Rae Jepsen handing out her number saying, ‘Call Me Maybe’ and a scorned Taylor Swift telling her ex ‘We’re Never EVER getting back together.’ But look out because the gentleman serving up the next latest savory item on the menu is one young man by the name – Pip. With the debut single Who Cares’ he serves up a refreshing taste of what’s to come on his debut album.
Pip takes us musically into the future with a little tast of the past. He fuses the lovable synth sounds of yesterday’s funk and the new contemporary obsession of electronic music. In a musical landscape that continues to drift to the Pop lover’s ears, it’s great to see Pip working with such talented people [Luis Dubuc (Mystery Skulls, The Secret Handshake) and Noah Shain (Cody Simpson, Skrillex, Orson) ] to give an innovative approach to his records.
The record is exactly what radio needs right now, and it’s the sort of music the credited musical industry aficionados look for. Congratulations on a hit getting rave reviews! Over 20,000 hits on YouTube and counting!
There are those who dream, and there are those who act on their dreams even if it hurts. It may be a tough road I travel on, but my ‘impossible dream’ is to someday perform with Tristan MacManus.
Why The Dancer in Me Wants to Fulfill This Dream
When I first saw Tristan perform, it was the first time I was really connected with another dancer’s performance – not just physically but emotionally as well. There was this infectious positive energy. It was not just about skill, technique and showmanship. Tristan dances with so much passion and soul. That really inspired me to push myself as a dancer — not only to be a better dancer, but to really spread the happiness I felt dancing unto others.
Why I Want to FulFill This Dream
Not a day goes by that I disregard my blessings. One thing that forever remains in my heart is family. When Tristan showed that tattoo he has has of ‘Family Over Everything’ it really moved me to tears. Honestly, I would not have the amount of success or respect I do without my family. To see him highly regard his family that it’s a permanent part of his body and soul makes him a fabulous dancer, and more magnificent person.
The amount of patience he has is remarkable. Being on such a popular show, there is a tendency for the head to be consumed by fame. But even when he is frustrated, he has such tolerance and willingness to cooperate that makes his parings successful. We dancers can get so bossy and argumentative sometimes that we lose the bigger picture. Not once have I seen that in Tristan. He has such a kind heart that I really admire him for it. So, whether I get dream fulfilled to the nines with a massive production on a big stage or in an intimate dance studio setting, I know my heart won’t be dancing just then. Dancing with Tristan will make my heart dance on for many, many, many years to come.
It’s just not the stars who are getting the buzz for the much-anticipated ‘All Star’ season of ‘Dancing With The Stars.’ Fan favorite pros are returning to deliver spectacular performances. One of them is the massive crowd pleaser – Tristan MacManus. The Irish cutie partners up with Season 10 alum, Pamela Anderson and begins the all-star journey on the show’s premiere on September 24th. Before he stunningly captured our hearts in Season 12 as a member of the DWTS Troupe (later on as a pro for Nancy Grace and Gladys Knight) Tristan built up quite the resume. As a youngin in Europe, MacManus won many junior and Amateur competitions. After years of honing his well-crafted skills he became a part of productions such as Oliver! and Aladdin. More productions like the smash-hit Burn The Floor were added onto his credits. Which afterwards he landed a spot on the show. He gained so much fan acclaim on DWTS that by Season 14, he was selected as the male pro in the special ‘Design A Dance’ segment. I recently spoke with MacManus about DWTS, and his life as a dancer.
You were a part of the smashing sensation ‘Burn The Floor.’ How would you describe your experience w/ the show?
‘Burn The Floor’ was an amazing experience, the first show that made me open my eyes to a new way of dancing. I found it very difficult to establish myself in the show for many years and left and came back alot but it made me come back stronger each time to be accepted in the same group of talent that the show had. I met some amazing people and got to travel the world and was another step to where I am now.
What was it like transitioning from Troupe to pro?
The step from Troupe to getting a partner was great, but it made me realise that people don’t really get the troupe. I think people feel as those the troupe are of a different standard in a way they forget that we are all pros and work equally as hard, we just don’t get the coverage of someone who may dance with a celebrity. The troupe is unbelievable and each and every one of them would be fully capable of stepping up. Unfortunately at the minute there aren’t many openings but anything can happen.
3) This is now your 3rd season, what has been the biggest take away you’ve learned?
This is my third season being partnered with a celebrity but its my fourth season on the show, I have learned alot. I think its fair to say that you can’t judge somebody by what is written about them(which I never do but seems a common thing for people to do) and I’ve learned that sometimes some truths aren’t the whole truth and certainly that words can be completely taken out of context and that some people will simply not like you so no matter how hard you try you have to focus on the positives.
4) My first impression of Pamela was _________.
I was delighted to meet Pam for the first time, we hit it off straight away she has a great personality, very funny and very intelligent and I think no matter how long this experience lasts that I’ve met somebody very special that I will have in my life for a long long time. Very very interesting and strong person who in my opinion deserves a lot more than she gets.
5) In six words, describe your life as a dancer.
Best time ever every single day

Here’s My Favorite MacManus Performance:
Editor’s Note: Apologies on Q3. I asked him about his Troupe experience, but completely forgot to add to his seasons when I came up with the questions at 1:30 in the morning. Thank you Tristan for the interview. It was a pleasure! The ex-ballroom student in me was definitely fangirling inside. A momentous moment in my career as a journalist.
To this day, a class discussion from ninth grade history remains etched in my memory. One day, the teacher asked us ‘So, story characters aside, who is your ideal mate? This was the supplement to our lecture of the ‘Renaissance Man/Woman’ the person who had/did it all to be the ideal mate. Even now, I ponder on the question: ‘Who has all those qualities’ I’m looking for in a gentleman? Beyond being extremely talented – Pip’s thoughtfulness and sincere personality, amongst many other wonderful qualities make him the ideal ‘Renaissance Man’ to me.
He Makes Me Laugh….
Logically speaking, being around a positive person makes you positive person. I’m drawn to laughter. My favorite show is ‘How I Met Your Mother.’ Whether he makes goofy material up (like singing about ‘Double Double’ Cheeseburgers ) or says random hilarious things, I am so thankful Pip keeps me laughing on a daily basis. Like his music, his humor is my therapeutic medicine for the soul.
He Love His Career…
Ethically speaking, when it comes to character I have to find someone who loves their career. When you wake up in the morning, and you dread going to work — it’s like a sure painful and slow death. You can tell by the enthusiasm and hours he puts into his passion that his work is not a job – it is a career. Pip truly loves what he does for a living.
His Heart is Tremendous…
Time cannot possibly allow me to elaborate on how wonderful this man truly is. I feel like I have talked everyone’s ears off about him. But beyond his YiM foundation, he has such a kind heart. It is unfathomable how many amazing qualities he possesses. I mean a) he let me host a contest with him which ended up being a celebration of his support system. b) He day and in and day out makes people’s day by talking to them, favoriting a tweet, or just simply saying’ hello.’ It’s wonderful what one little response can do. c) He truly cares about us — his support system. A night that will be forever embedded into my mind is when he saw I was upset and said, ‘Who is being mean to you? We’ll beat ‘em up?’ Hahah you don’t wanna mess around with Pip, when says this stuff. Hahah he’ll go all gangsta on ya. Anyhoo, back to the point… Philip ‘Pip’ Andrew Arnold is hands down the nicest guy I have ever met. The fact that he is a family man, really makes me happy. Of course, in this lifetime it would be near to impossible for me to land a guy as wonderful as him. But for the purposes of this assignment, let’s just say he will be forever more the Renaissance man who stole my heart.
‘… The Show hasn’t produced a breakout star.’ – Chris Talbott — AP MUSIC WRITER
When you examine the TV scene today, there is a noisy landfill of singing shows (I.E. ‘American Idol,’ ‘The Voice, ‘Next,’ ‘X Factor). True, a lot of the times, you never hear about what the contestants are doing after the show, but a lot of them — especially from ‘The Voice’ are doing really well post their show stint. Published through AP, Chris Talbott recently wrote a piece claiming that the contestants ‘falter’ after the show, and struggle to find success. Despite what Talbott had to say, ‘The Voice’ is a show who’s sole purpose is to hold and nourish vocal integrity. In addition, there are a handful of contestants whose dreams are still flourishing well after their stint on the show.
Regarding the show’s view on talent… Ok, I agree… there tends to be this addiction spotlighting the judges. HOWEVER, that does not disregard the talent that comes onto the show. They mentioned how even though Javier Colon was extremely talented — he’s now looking for a record deal despite the one he won from the 1st season. To clarify, he dropped the deal from Universal Music Group, because they did not give him the proper promotion he needed to launch his material. TV show or not, this happens to a lot of label artists. In fact some of my friends are in that very situation. They have records for radio, the label’s just not wanting to give them air play (mainly to focus on their big ticket artists), but back to the point…
I could literally sit here all night and tell you all the amazing things that are happening with ‘The Voice’ contestants or that have already did. Dia Frampton (S1) – toured with Blake Shelton. Tony Lucca will tour with his S2 mate Justin Hopkins. Not only that he’s performed with Adam Levine, and Adam signed Lucca onto his record label. I interviewed Justin Hopkins, and he’s working on some material while he’s prepping for the Lucca/Hopkins tour. Tony Vincent (s2) released an EP recently. Nathan Parrett is prepping for a show, just did Spring Awakening in Concert, and he’s making an EP. Like I said, I could pretty much sit here all night and tell you how people are going onto greener pastures – post Voice but can I focus on one particular one?
Once upon a time, on Season 2 appeared a bow tie wearing, suspender sporting, lovable gentleman named Pip. Little did I know this man would light a spark in my life.
I love my family, and there are first and formost my rock and foundation. But thanks to Pip I added a huge family to my own – the lovely community of Pipsters. Not only that, but his own family has taken me under their wing and has given me so much support it’s surreal. Back to Pip…
Ok, 1) No one has a voice like his. NO ONE. He’s vibrantly unique, and uses full advantage of that. He’s not letting anyone tell him to be anyone else. He’s Pip through and through. The show never took away from that.
2) Pip’s an example of success after the show. He’s just released a debut single (which has 12,000+ views, by the way and you can view it here ). Not only that he’s had numerous performances since his departure, and once No Formalities comes out, that was fully funded by his Kickstarter, he’ll be planning a tour. Things have not slowed down. He’s working with his manager and team to get a record deal. Yeah, Pip’s not doing anything post ‘The Voice?’ Please, he’s so busy it’s difficult to get a moment of his time nowadays.
3) The thing I love about Pip is that he’s basically become my mentor over the past couple of months. True, I am older than him, but he has so much wisdom beyond his years that he guides me and my moves on what I should do to get my career in the music industry. That mentor/student relationship would have never happened if it weren’t for ‘The Voice.’ Plus, he’s one of the most interactive musicians I have ever met. The sheer volume of kindess and graciousness he gives to his support system is insane. If I had it my way, he’d be teaching ‘Fan/Musician relations 101.’ All in all, I’m just really happy I got to know the gentleman. Truly, that would have never been possible without the show.
To close this extremely long novel, I have this to say… Season 3 kicks so much ass thus far (S/O to D’borah! Thanks for the follow! #TeamXtina). There’s some incredible talent, and regardless of label contract or not these people will go places. To finish — Mr. Talbott these people are incredible, and your argument is irrelevant. Go ahead…. Push… My… Button.
Alright, you know the viral sensation that was ‘Call Me Maybe’ and now the dance craze that is ‘Gangnam Style.’ It’s time to make our boy Pip ‘viral’ with our own lip dub/ dance video. Promotion aside, it’s time to celebrate and have fun with his new single! It’s definitely danceable. The time has come to ask YOU to star in my new video.
The Video: What do I do?
Well, it’s going to be hard to coordinate who lip dubs what… To save time you can either lip dub the whole song, lip dub your favorite verse or the chorus. The more participate the more I don’t have to worry about shortage of lip dubbing. I’d rather have too much content than not enough. But all in all you can dance too! If you have swag choreo, BRING IT! You can just be goofy with it even! The point is to have fun.
Video Format:
Please make sure the file format is .mov. THIS IS IMPORTANT! In some instances I can use a converter, but it’s just easiest if the file is .mov.
Turning Them In:
Email the videos to me at pipproject22@gmail.com The deadline will be next Friday 9/21/12 by 5PM EST.
Like always if you have questions just ask! Let’s have fun and get lots of people involved!
Some guys dream of the day when they successfully perform with a group of their long-time friends. Many few have actually accomplished that dream. Enter: The New Velvet. Even though the group has known each other for awhile, they only recently professionally performed as a band. They might be “underground,” but their support system grows on a daily basis. Lead Vocalist, Dustin, gives me a closer in depth look into the menality of The New Velvet.
1. So, guys! Introduce yourself, tell us a little about you individually, and let us know how you became a band.
Our band consists of Dustin Paul, Robby, Sheep and Ben. This is Dustin right now- I like cats and can be kind of awkward at times; I tend to use basic household items in excess. For example I will take 3 tissues instead of just 1 to blow my nose… not sure why; maybe its like a safety blanket kinda thing. Ben, Sheep and I went to high school together and that is where we all met (although I did know Sheep through the grapevine for a long time before that, since about 5th grade) We grew into the band we are today through the musical experimentation and the strange immaturities of high school. We have been blessed to know and work with an amazing and talented up’n'coming Engineer/Producer/Mixer with his own studio (in his backyard…) Ben’s brother Jake! (www.Jantelis.com) Jake records many bands and produces some of the best sounding independently done music I know of. Robby was in another band whom was recording at the studio, and basically, we stole him from the other band… haha well… everyone was cool with it so it all worked out. From then on, the 4 of us were doing all different kinds of music under different band names. We even had some other guys join and leave the band during that period. “The New Velvet” didn’t come into being until about a year and a half ago; well…the songs starting coming but the name was still being decided on at that point.
2. Being an “underground” group… You’ve gotten to perform with the likes of Plain White T’s, Natasha Beddingfield and other well-known acts. How have you made the most of those opportunities?
Songwriting, recording and just getting out there. E-mailing/calling a lot of places and the will to go anywhere to play in front of anybody!
3. I really enjoy the song, “Imaginary Girl” off your debut album. What was the inspiration behind the track?
Imaginary girl was one of the first 2-3 songs we wrote as TNV. For that reason alone, I think it is special to all of us. It’s when we were finally settling on our sound and Imaginary girl helped define that direction. Different guys in the band will tell you different ideas that inspired them in the writing of that song. For me, it was the years I spent dreaming of the perfect girl I would “meet one day.” The truth is, you never meet that person. You may meet someone who you fall in love with but it’s never exactly like you had in mind. So as I grew up I realized this Imaginary girl would always be in my head… and never be real! And in some way, she would always be perfect because I dreamt her up. I felt compelled towards writing a song to express this romance. However, I would warn people not get this confused with an “imaginary friend.” They are not the same thing.
4. Speaking about your debut album… It dropped last September. What has been the biggest advancement for the group, and what can fans expect for the future?
Our biggest advancement has been the relationship we’ve managed to build with fans/friends through our songs. One of the coolest things in the world is when we witness people on our social media websites becoming friends through the common ground of TNV family. We meet people, people meet each other, and we are all there for the same reason: to make a connection through music. That is, and always will be the most astonishing and surreal experience for us
To name a random cool thing that happened this past year: We were flown to Odessa, Ukraine for a performance through the clothing company Ecko Unltd., and shortly after played their cooperate dinner at Chelsea Piers in NYC with Chiddy Bang! Like I said before, TNV has only been around for about 1.5 years so that was a pretty incredible experience. However, nothing compares to the people, friends and new fans we met along the way!
In the future our fans can expect the unexpected. Expect more videos and songs. Expect to meet us this year and expect to sing the songs with us right in front of you. We plan on meeting everyone in one way or another.
5. Do you guys have a theme song that is not one of your own?
Not sure, if we do it changes often and its completely insane.
6. What is one thing you would change about the music industry if you could?
Bring real musical instruments and singer/songwriters back to radio. Less forced/produced pop stars and more natural sounding tracks. Maybe bring artist development back to the table in the major label scene, and less jumping on an already moving bandwagon (an artist that is already having success will THEN get interest from a label) in order to sign artists. There are so many incredibly talented artists out there who simply don’t have the means to expose their music, and because of that a lot of great music is not being recognized or heard.
7. If you were not musicians what professions would you choose?
Probably some other aspect of the music industry or if I could get payed to play video games…
8. How about any new material the fans should know about?
We’re always writing and coming up with new ideas. Life just doesn’t feel right without it. Album #2 is on everyone’s mind.
9. What has been the most rewarding part about being in a group. Especially one that you’ve known the other members since high school.
We are very fortunate to have the connection and history that we do. I think we cherish the fact that we’ve made it this long and far together. The most rewarding thing for us is sending our songs out into the world and them bringing us back what we now call “The New Velvet family.” We are unimaginably grateful for every single person who has joined it and we read (and try to respond) to every message/comment. The only thing better than writing a song you love is seeing what that song can do to others, and if they feel something, automatically, you’ve something right. We will never take that fact for granted.
10. Following the six word memoir, in six words describe your life as an artist.
My goal is usually to be the professional music journalist with a rep, but today’s a fun day! I have some more exciting news for you all!
First Order of Business…
EXCITING VENTURES IN SCHOOL!
So, as of Wednesday I am officially a part of the Union Programming Board! What UPB does is organize events for students on a daily basis. In a given year, they will conduct over 400 ‘happnenings’. So, you can imagine it takes a whole crew to pull off successful gatherings. I will be a part of the UPB crew, which basically gives our events the “wedding/prom” effect — making these events look pretty. I will be studying lighting and sound design, which of course in the concert field will be majorly beneficial! And guess what? I will be meeting all of our performers in the concert series! So what does that mean for you? INTERVIEWS! YES! INTERVIEWS! With some local yokals who are fantastic to some more well known acts we bring. So, I am nothing but thrilled to be a part of this organization.
What the BLOG? WHAT ABOUT MUSIC?
Well, right now there is a ton of stuff dropping! Which is great news for all, so that way I can speak about it! So much is going on, and I would even love to touch on topics that deal with the record industry.
Interviews?
YES! YES! YES! Of course, there will be interviews! In addition to the ones I mentioned in my last post there will be more interviews!
I recently contacted:
Zach Pincus – A wonderful Indie artist who has a hybrid Pop Rock-esque feel to him. HE’S AMAZING! Love him, so I look forward to getting inside his head.
Lisa Davis: A major A & R and music executive – She’s a respected professional, and this will give you a chance to learn more about how the record labels think and work.
Michael Weeks (possibly/unconfirmed at the moment): If I can I’m going to try to set up an interview with Michael. I met him at an Austin conference. Even though he was a panelist speaking as a PR director, he KNOWS music. He worked in radio, and he is SO WELL versed in the record industry. Like it’s not even funny.
So, there you have it! MORE FUN THINGS TO COME! Let’s just hope I can make it all happen!
Stop for a second: When was the last time a voice stunned you? Really left your ears — and your heart– going WOW! Well, for many that is exactly what happend. Pip gathered a strong and solid fanbase from his stint on the popular TV show, “The Voice.” Now, with a fully funded project — the 20 year-old soulful songster releases his debut single due out September 11th.
Pip is working with music pros such as Noah Shain (Dead Sera, Sonny/Skrillex) and Luis Dubuc (Mystery Skulls, The Secret Handshake). The track features Pip’s soulful voice and will highlight his own personal unique style of a hybrid “old-school funk meets contemporary electronic music.” “Who Cares” will be the precedent for his debut EP “No Formalities.”
For any inquires contact Pip’s Manager — Nanea Miyata at nanea@pipmusic.com
It’s very rare these days that the music video matches the track’s theme and overall concept. Asher Monroe dropped a video today that defies that entirely. ”Here With You” co-written by songwriter master Ryan Tedder speaks about living in the moment. Having a great time, and just focusing on being with that one person — hence here with you. Every element of the video embodies that message.
Regarding wardrobe — the fashion style of a video can play a major part. Here you have several looks — The classy suited- up debonair look (which is by far my favorite), the casual party, and the solo performance look rocking out the leather jacket. Each look fits a variety of moods. That says no matter what you wear, any night is a good night to enjoy the company of your friends and blast up some rockin’ tunes.
Heavily driven in post-production, it gives the video a futuristic sense of wonderment. Making the viewer feel the energy and excitement each party goer endures. Props goes out to the FX and post-production department!
Wardrobe, post, lighting, everyone did a fabulous job assembling a fantastic video! Loved it from start to finish.
Asher is well on his way to break the mold of the traditional Top 40 broken record. *raises glass* Well done, Asher! You’re welcome to suit up anytime, Mr. Debonair!
The title might sound a little pretentious and arrogant, like I live some extravagant life I need to tell you about it. That is not the case at all. I have just been out of touch with everyone that I decided an update/rundown of current events is necessary.
School
This being my senior year (technically I am a super senior) in college, my work and school life have kicked into over drive. A lot of my classes are geared toward my minor in film. Which I have some exciting news! On occasion, I will be sharing my short film scripts with you that I write in class! So, be on the lookout!
This Blog… Are You Writing Anymore?
The answer is YES! OF COURSE! I have been writing for many years, and quite honestly stopping me would be pretty tough. There are some exciting things coming up!
Interviews
I knew this was a huge pull to my site, and I am so thankful for everyone who has even glanced at my page. In fact just a couple days ago, I celebrated with all of you that over 4,000 have visited my humble little page. AND I SEE ALL OF YOU! From the states all the way to places like Germany, China, Singapore, India… ALL OVER THE WORLD, and I am truly touched you take the time to read my posts. Anyway, back to the interviews. YES THERE WILL BE MORE!
Right now, I am talking to a few people that possible published interviews are to come!
Nanea Miyata: This young lady is like my idol! I am so impressed with the work she has done with Philip “Pip” Arnold. Not only that her website (nanemiyata.com) is chockfull of beautiful photographs (that Nanea herself takes), wedding videography and her other works.
Chris Kale Jones: He’s probably best known for being in the touring production of the Tony Award winning hit musical, Jersey Boys. Chris and I corresponded when I was in high school. It’s amazing that we reconnected all these years, and I cannot to introduce you all to this talented man!
The New Velvet: This upcoming pop group started following me on Twitter, so that lead me to check out their music. They’ve got some great tracks and I can see a good interview coming from them!
Michelle Tomaszweski - Michelle is an awesome person! I interviewed her a few years ago for a class, and she is just a lovely person to learn from. Who is she? Well, she is responsible for some incredible looks you see on the stage, red carpets, and photo shoots. She’s styled for The Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato and other notable acts. It’s not confirmed, but I am working on getting the chance to interview her.
Paul Nowell: Aubrey Logan (the amazing Jazz Vocalist/Trombonist I interviewed Earlier) lead me to this terrific lad! I’ve checked out his material on youtube (PaulTheTrombonist) and it looks like a fun interview! He’s sounds amazing, and I cannot wait to talk to him!
So, there you have it! Things to look forward to and what’s been happening! On top of that, I have been just studying and spending time with the Phamily.
That’s it for Steph Pham news! Tune in next time for music reviews, interviews, and lots more to come!
“This song is about keepin’ up with the Joneses, and how that’s an incredible waste of time.” – Ryan Tedder
Today the desire to show status has become more apparent than ever. To quote another line from one of OneRepublic’s other songs, “It’s like we’re chasing all those stars. Driving shiny big black cars. OneRepublic’s video for “All The Right Moves” tells the band’s message of how sticking to the status quo is inevitably a monumental time waster.
Narrative
Story basics:
Who is our hero (Protagonist): People would assume it would be the band. However, looking closer it is the young boy who introduces the group .
What does our hero want (Hero’s Quest): Simple, he just wants to make money to survive, and if conniving and scheming is the way to do that, he’ll get it.
What happens if our hero doesn’t survive (Conflict): What is the conflict? Well, he is at this extravagant ball. The question is, is everyone going to hand him money or are they going to snootily dismiss him? In the video you see him stealing a fancy pocket watch. If he doesn’t succeed he’ll go another day of begging, stealing and fighting to survive.
What is the meaningful conclusion (Resolution): Well, you do see a gentleman attending the ball playfully nudge the boy. But the real meaningful conclusion? Everyone leaves the ball — it commentates on society. If you try to follow everyone’s footsteps who else is there to become?
From the story to film elements…
The lighting is spectacular. I’m sure they used light kits, but they matched the practicals (aka the fixtures already in the set aka the chandeliers), creating this kind of gold tone to the room. You can see the change of light — It transitions from this sunset color to dark and dim by the video’s end. Which relates to the message: the glamour looks great in the beginning, but then it means nothing in the end.
The wardrobe department did a fantastic job. The gowns and suits looked fabulous, but do you realize what they wore? Masks… everyone’s hiding who they truly are. In a materialistic world, we got lost in our honest identity.
Speaking on the choreography: It really spoke to the thesis of the video as well. Everyone is doing this dizzy waltz just to keep up with the status quo. Towards the end they all looked robotic moving simultaneously in stacco movement.
Everything collectively has significance to the song’s overall theme. The director, treatment writer, and entire crew did a fabulous job executing the video. It takes a lot to create a music video, and I think in order to get your time and money’s worth — it has to relate and speak what the song is trying to say. Without a doubt, OneRepublic hit all the right moves.
Cast: Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Alyson Hannigan, Cobie Smulders and Neil Patrick Harris
Network: CBS
Over the years, I connected with a lot of shows. So, why does “How I Met Your Mother” stand out from the rest? Well for one simple reason – it is one of the few shows that my sisters will all sit down and watch. In addition to giving us a bonding ritual, “How I Met Your Mother” humorously lifts my spirits, teaches me life lessons, and more than anything has inspired me in a subject I care deeply about – love.
Uniting My Sisters and My Friends
Whenever my sisters and I did go on “HIMYM” marathons, it was something I enjoyed immensely. We all love the show. Hearing my sisters laugh obnoxiously at the jokes makes me laugh. It really makes me happy seeing them relax and enjoy each other’s company. It does not happen a lot when we are all in school. I truly cherish the moments that we do spend together, whether it is grabbing a snow-cone or simply just sitting in front of the TV for a “HIMYM” marathon.
Not only do I talk about the show with my sisters, but with my friends as well! It was one of the early bonding ties for my friend Aaron and I. He used to call me Robin (even though I call myself more of a Lily – just watch the show, you’ll see what I mean). We’d have random conversations whenever we go to lunch, and I would always reference the show. Never fails – or in Barney’s words – True story. I really enjoyed discussing it, because it always just seemed to make me and quite frankly others happy.
The Show Goes On…
Now, the show has not officially opened up whether or not it will have its last season on season 8. However, since the show might see its end in the “near future” I wanted to say this. We could be here all night if I wrote on all the amazing things I like about the show (there’s the extraordinarily witty and brilliant writing, the acting, — I’ll just stop myself before I get carried away). If I ever got to sit down with the cast or any of the crew (producers, writers, directors, etc). I’d tell them this…
“HIMYM” is something that cannot be shelved for many reasons. I admire Ted’s perseverance in love. No matter how many times he gets knocked down (and sometimes brutally) he goes after what he wants — and hey the show wouldn’t have his title if he didn’t. Marshall is my ideal husband. Sure he’s not the cookie-cutter perfect husband – but who is really? He’s dedicated, loyal, hilarious, and just has a massive amounts of qualities I adore — Segel is just brilliant with his delivery. The whole cast is a gem. Ted wouldn’t be driven without Josh Radnor’s portrayal, Robin wouldn’t be the witty, strong, courageous and awesome gal without Cobie. Neil has gotten so much critical praise for playing Barney, as he should. On today’s comedic television landscape he is seriously hands down one of most talented actors out there. And I wouldn’t be compared to the lovable, quirky, intelligent, and lovely Lily if it weren’t Alyson’s portrayal. So, to everyone involved… I thank you for giving me a show I can honestly connect with. It hasn’t happened in a long time. Thank you for teaching me to cherish the moments with your friends and family, continue to believe in love, and to live in the now… Why? Because life is LEGEN- WAIT FOR IT – DARY!
a tune or part of a song that repeats in one’s mind.
For the past couple of days, I listened to different mediums just to see what new earworm I could get. Turning to Pandora, iHeartRadio, and YouTube, nothing would stick — except for this song by OneRepublic. Just for the record, I am capable of speaking about other artists. I just so happen to be doing a lot of research on the group since I am a huge fan of their music.
What made this such an earworm for me? Well it’s a combination of things. I remember hearing this for the first time on the radio in ’09. I immediately fell in love with it. Who the heck puts the cello on a track for mainstream. The cello is the first thing you hear and it’s mesmerizing, just like the lyrics and the score of the song.
And everyday I see the news All the problems that we could solve And when a situation rises Just write it into an album Send it straight to gold But I don’t really like my flow, no, so
People may not listen to each other, but sadly people listen to maintstream music, TV and film. What we place out there for the world consumption really affects everyday life… I love what Ryan Tedder says about the track. When asked in a “making of” video for their music video what the song meant he responded, “The idea of the song is do you want me to write songs or communicate to you actual truth or do you want to hear what you want to hear.”
So many artists get caught up in the obsession of chart performances and getting air play that they forget to write and perform who their “real” message. It amazes me that for the many years that OneRepublic has been together they’re able to stay true to who they are… never letting the label, managers, or anyone define them. They define who they are, and I think that’s great.
Musically everyone deserves props, from Ryan on the passionate vocals, Brent playing that beautiful cello motif, Drew on that amazing guitar section, Zach playing the viola and of course Eddie giving us that unmistakable heartbeat of the song — the drums. It all came together so beautifully.
My favorite thing about the music video is that it is super organic. Nothing over the top. No clubs, strobe lights or stunts or anything of that extravagance. You just have a story that Ryan narrates, and you the audience are the interpretor. Props to the director Christopher Sims.
The music video does an excellent job of representing the track. It saddens me that a meaningful song like this piqued at 21 on the Billboard Charts, yet something like “Call Me Maybe” or “Whistle” tops the charts. One thing that isn’t a mystery is OneRepublic’s gift of songwriting. The story is within the words. Are you going to tell me what I want to hear, or are going to tell me the truth?
When she is not dazzling the likes of YouTube viewers with her creatively fun “Top 40 Tuesday” covers, Aubrey Logan is busy performing around the LA area. Sassy, spunky, and full of energy this lovely and talented trombonist/vocalist breathes freshness into today’s music. While the world is continuing its obsession with pop, dance and club records, Logan charms us with her jazzy yet modern flair. I recently spoke her as she preps for some upcoming for performances, and gets ready to release her debut album.
1.What was the big hook that got you into music, and how did you get your start?
My parents are music teachers, so I was always around music. I grew up hearing various styles and genres and fell into it by osmosis. But my parents never pushed me into being a musician. They would have been happy and supportive no matter the path I chose. I got my start singing, dancing, and acting in musicals as a kid. I played a lot of child roles. When I got too old for those roles, about age 12, I stopped with the musicals and picked up a trombone. From then on, I continued to practice as much singing and trombone-playing as possible.
2. Your voice is refreshingly unique! What techniques do you undertake to take care of it?
Thank you so much! I am glad you think so. I try to sing like I talk. It feels natural that way (yes…that would tell you that I’m a bit of an animated talker…) I warm-up my voice daily to prevent injury, kind of like an athlete stretches before he runs a race. If I wake up with a “groggy” or sore throat, like many of us do, I let it be groggy as I warm up, until my voice “wakes up” a little. I make sure I train with a vocal coach periodically to keep me from developing any bad habits. Since I play trombone, I try to do this exercise where I will play my horn for 4 measures, then sing for 4 measures, then play horn for 4 measure, sing for 4 measures, and so on…as quickly as possible. This helps me get my muscles and body more familiar with switching back and forth so much. It’s hard! I have to practice it if I want to pull it off…
3. Pip from The Voice was captivated by one of your live performances, which then led to your own collaboration. What was it like performing with him?
Pip is a wonderful person and an extremely talented singer and artist. Singing with him was a pleasure. We decided what song we would sing a few minutes before the show, and we just went up and sang it together. It was very organic and memorable.
4. I love the concept of your “Top 40 Tuesday” covers. How did you come up with the idea, and what’s the thought process of making such familiar songs your own?
I’ve always sang covers just for fun, in fact, I sang in a wedding band back when I was living in Boston. We sang the Top 40 songs at every wedding reception. So I was always familiar with learning lyrics and memorizing, etc…But it always helped me memorize when I could make the song my own a little bit. After spending a little time turning “Single Ladies” into something COMPLETELY different than Beyonce’s version (see the video of my performance of Single Ladies here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2zGlYMrtlc)…I thought, I could do this with lots of songs! A good song is a good song…meaning, if the lyrics are solid and it’s catchy enough, you really can change it into any genre you want, any instrumentation you want, any tempo you want, etc…So I started listening to more pop music (to be honest, I don’t usually listen to pop!) and putting the songs into a different setting. I wanted to start a YouTube channel with the hopes of getting more comfortable looking at myself on tape. NOTHING is more humbling! And Top-40-Tuesday was born!
5. Today many arts programs are missing from the schools. What did the arts do for your education, and how important is it that we keep them them?
These are great questions! For me, my entire childhood revolved around my passion for music. If I didn’t have music at school, I would have gone somewhere else to find it. However, I am extremely grateful I had it in my public school system! For me, music-in-school was motivation to do well in my other classes, math, science, English, history…I knew if I kept my schedule organized, studied hard in all my classes, completed my work, etc, then I would succeed as a musician too…also…I couldn’t go on music field-trips if my grade-point-average wasn’t at a certain level! My music classes were a reward.
Study after study has revealed that having music in the public school relates to higher reading levels, math scores, and overall academic achievement. I believe it’s because learning music requires you to learn to be organized, work hard, and think quickly. Not only is keeping music in the schools important…but taking them OUT of the schools will, and does, severely hurt the environment of any school. One day we can talk more about my experience teaching at an at-risk high school. I was hired to begin a music program at a school that had none. Kids who were failing out of school started graduating. There was an immense turnaround. It really blessed my heart!
6. What has been the biggest highlight of your career?
Winning the 2009 Shure-Montreux Jazz Voice Competition in Montreux, Switzerland at the Montreux Jazz Festival. http://shureatmontreux.wordpress.com/tag/montreux-jazz-voice-competition/ I met my manager there, Solomon Burke. He died shortly after in an accident, but really encouraged me and fostered the beginning of my career. Also, it was there that I met my mentor and producer Patrice Rushen www.patricerushen.com. She’ll be producing most of my debut solo album to come out next year.
7. Carnegie Hall or Madison Square Garden?
BOTH!
8. Any details on your debut record you’d like to tell us?
Yes. It’s a jazzy pop album…or a poppy jazz album, depending on how you hear it. Produced by grammy-nominated Patrice Rushen. I’ve written most of the material, with the exception of one or two jazz/pop standards. I’ve really poured my heart and soul into the songs on the album, and I’m just thrilled that I’ll have the opportunity to share them with the listeners.
9. How about performances? Any upcoming shows?
Yes! Please join me at the Hollywood House of Blues on Friday, September 28th in the Foundation Room at 8PM. If you “Like” me on facebook, I will make sure you are aware of all the details. www.facebook.com/aubreyloganmusic. Also, you can follow me on twitter to get news and updates! www.twitter.com/aubrey_logan. I’ll make sure to also announce it on my YouTube Channel www.youtube.com/singthetrombone.
10. Following the six word memoir formula, In six words describe your life as an artist.
There is that list in life we keep of the people who would like to meet. At first OneRepublic was on that list. Then, the more I found out about the group itself, the desire for me to work with them grew stronger. After spending so much time in an industry that is chock-full of negativity surrounding it, I made a pact to myself that I would only work with people who kept a positive outlook. OneRepublic not only embodies that positive outlook, they make it a mission to live it out daily.
Their music continues to have a powerful and positive impact on people. The other night, I watched an episode of their “Good Life” series and someone from Luxembourg said that she was having a rough patch in her life, and the song “Good Life” lifted her spirits. Sure, every group or artist has music that cheers people up, but “Good Life” really is a pick me up. Not only for me, but for a lot of people. I remember hearing “Secrets” for the first time. There were legit chills sent through my body due to its haunting beauty. In the whole catalogue of OneRepublic, there is not one song that does not move me. Each song has significance. To say that about an artist is a pretty big statement.
I cannot stress to you how amazing I think it is that OneRepublic gets involved in charitable acts. Their partnership with Save The Children is really wonderful. Like I’ve mentioned before, my sister’s passion for charitable and non-profit organizations have rubbed off on me. I want to work with artists who see beyond their job. They want to give back, and I love that OneRepublic makes that a part of their life. You can see it comes from an honest place too. Like they don’t feel like it’s work to help out others. How you can tell? The way they treat their own community — their fans.
Watching their series, one of my favorite parts was when they did spontaneous shows on their tour. When they were in Europe, they did a free midnight show at night and two thousand people came out to the square. When Ryan went, “Wait. Before we sing any song… I want to you hear guys ‘Tell me what you want to heeeeear!” They all started singing and it was such a heart warming moment. Seeing so many gathered in positivity was amazing. Cops told them they could only do one song, they did 5. That one show wasn’t they only spontaneous show they did. They did one on the Charles Bridge, and one at Denver University in CO. I just love the effort they make going out and spreading love to their fans.
OneRepublic is not like any other group. They have such a high integrity about their music. Instead of using a traditional studio, they bought a house in Denver and made their studio. They wanted their own sound. Not only is their music highly important to them their support system is too. Even if I don’t work with OneRepublic one day, the truly showed me that music has a power to heal, lift spirits and make people live the “good life.”
It seems like everyone can be a star these days with outlets like YouTube, SoundCloud, and other media platforms. But can everyone be like Frank Anthony? It’s rare these days for a rising artist to work with major songwriters and producers, but thanks to Anthony’s multi-talents he’s gotten to work with some highly noted and respected professionals in the industry. I had the pleasure of speaking with young gentleman about his life and career upon the release of his “Sixty 8 Comeback Mixtape.”
1. You’re a multi-faceted act. You sing, write, you’re an instrumentalist and you dance. Do you have a favorite part of performing?
I would say that my favourite part of performing, would definitely be crowd interaction. The singing, the dancing and all that are already a part of me.. and are what I love to do, but nothing gets me more excited then a positive crowd reaction. At the risk of sounding cliché.. its a high.
2. Your music has a splash of Hip- Hop and R &B. How you incorporate several genres into your music and still make it your sound?
I would like to say that my delivery and personal touch, to the vocals on each song, are what generally make it “my sound”. We just try to incorporate sounds and melodies that are relevant in todays industry, and go from there… otherwise, my beats could be used for any artist.
3. You’ve worked with some pretty notable people inthe industry such as Scott Storch (Justin Timberlake, Fat Joe, Beyoncé), Jason“Pooh Bear” Boyd (Kelly Rowland, 112), and Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys. How did you get to work with them, and how has their mentoring helped your career?
I was recording in vegas and LA, and one thing just lead to another. It was somewhat of a domino effect. One producer lead to another. My greatest influence came from Poo Bear. I tried to mold myself off of his songwriting style, and vocal production methods. They seem to work the best for me… He was also somewhat of a big brother figure for me, we have a good friendship.
4. Your father was a performer, what is it like foryou to carry on his tradition of performing?
It feels right. Its where I want to be. As far as my father goes… I don’t think winning the lottery could make him happier …
5. More and more artists today hide behind a lot of “smoke and mirrors.” How important is it to you to show audiences that you arethe “real deal?”
I am not too concerned with trying to prove anything to anyone .. I am me, as a person and as an artist. If you like it, you do. If you don’t, you don’t. There is a lot of hate going around the industry these days, and to be honest, Im not really trying to concern myself with any of it. Every artist who is signed to a major label, has a reason for being signed. You don’t just make it in the music business for no reason…. thats what people need to try and remember…
6. You graduated from the Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. What was your degree in, and would you advise other musicians to further their education?
I graduate with a Business Marketing major. I would only encourage artists to further their education, if it was what they truly wanted to do. My biggest piece and most important piece of advice to anyone, artist or not… would be to follow your dreams and your heart!
7. You’ve been a Big Brother for the past couple of years. What do you enjoy the most about the program, and are you involved in any other non-profit/charitable organizations?
I have been a big brother for almost 5 years now. It has been a very rewarding experience. My little and I have formed an amazing bond, and we are much closer than just a program match. He can come to me with anything, and I take pride in being able to act as a role model in his life. I am only involved in big brothers for now, but would love to do other work in the future.
8. What is your dream venue you would like to perform at?
WEMBLEY STADIUM or SKY DOME (rogers centre) Toronto.. hands down!!
9. Any touring plans or record releases coming up?
There are some tentative things in the works, for both single releases and tours. I am not at liberty to discuss it at the moment, but you will know when it happens
10. Following the “six word memoir,” in six words describe your life as a musician.
My life as a musician.. : hectic, non-stop, different, regimented, exciting, amazing.
Relationships do not always end ambicaly. Sometimes, we just wish the worst to happen the one who stomps on our heart. For their sixth studio LP, California 37, Train delivers a track that is a great facetious and satirical way of “saying goodbye.”
First, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: the obvious comment many make is that the verses sound erely familiar to the main theme of Phantom of the Opera. Although that maybe true, I think it fits perfectly to the tone of the song. It’s a dark song, but it’s also a comedic one.
Expanding on the score of track, I LOVE the mariachi element. It’s something completely different in pop music. Train is known for their iconic rock pieces, but adding new flavors shows that they can survive in an ever-changing industry. True, they have added a lot of more “pop spice” to the recipe of their records now. It’s just a thing many artists cannot escape today… Take a look at Matchbox Twenty. They’re getting ready for thier big comeback, and their comeback track (“She’s So Mean”) is more “poppy” than their last records.
The lyrics of this track… BRILLIANT. Who says, “(She) got ran over by a purple crappy Scion?” All these ways of saying how his ex “died” are so exaggarated yet, so comically ingenious. I mean if my ex was a jerk, I’d want him to get eaten by a lion. Just sayin.
The music video was hilarious! I don’t know who directed it, but thank god it’s not like the typical music video. It’s actually narrative for one. The cinematography was great from shot a-z. It wasn’t static yet it didn’t give you a headache with a ton of dollys, trucks, zooms, etc. Oh, and can we just comment on the fact that Pat Monahan is friends with David Hasslehoff? They shop at the same market? Interesting…
So, if you’re in need of a good “revenge” track I say take a listen to “50 Ways to Say Goodbye.” I cannot wait for more material to come from the group. Monahan may be running out of ways to say goodbye, but he isn’t running out of success.
Can you imagine the day that you walk into a Target or Best Buy, and there is no music section? I couldn’t picture it either. The world continues to become more disgitally advanced. You can listen to music on your iPod, your smart phone, your tablets, your latops, your cars… Even some fridges can program Pandora. So, whatever happened to the album? When they were “records” they had their stake. You couldn’t just pick one or two songs to listen to. You had to buy the whole package. Today’s a whole other story. It’s completley singles driven, and that is a little disheartening. This generation is going to inreasingly lose the entire message of a record due to the selective options we create.
Of course we come from a society that likes instant gratificiation. It used to be you’d have to wait until release day to get the record. Now you can download something like “Call Me Maybe” in minutes from your own home.
Sure it creates more opportunity for air play. The faster you can put a song on radio, the more publicity you get. However, like I stated before, the whole message of the entire album gets lost. When an artist makes a record, they are making an entire record… They’re not in the booth just to shoot out one hit song. They want to release many hit songs.
I was watching some behind the scenes footage of OneRepublic making Waking Up. You could see how much work went into making just one album. Finding a remote location in Denver, turning a house into a recording studio. Then there’s writing, recording, producing… all the elements into making a record. An album doesn’t make itself. The process is extremely lengthy and tedious. They commented on this topic, and they share the same views. They want people to hear the record in its entirety. However, since they are a group for radio, they understand the game and understand that instead of releasing their album on a quicker pace… OneRepublic would have to just do it single by single and then release their record.
Honestly, whether a musician’s album has a theme woven in all the songs or not they still have a message within it. If you skip out a song, you could be missing a piece of the puzzle. Imagine not hearing “Yesterday” on Beatles record… or skipping out on “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Every song has its signifcance. Instead of getting a slice, try enjoying the whole pie.
Record: iTunes exclusive single of “Gonna Get Over You” feat. Ryan Tedder
We all know that catchy tune Ceelo gave us… You know the one that starts with an F and ends with a YOU? Well, thanks to some YouTube trolling… I found a track today that feeds off the same emotions as the earworm Mr. Lo gave us earlier.
Released last year on her Kaleidoscope Heart record, Sara takes us back to the sounds of the soda shop melodies we love in the era of Doo-Wop. However, she puts her own modern twist to it. Being a HUGE fan of those soda shop melodies (my dad blasted 60s music in the car when I grew up, and he still does), I love hearing these familiar harmonies and melodies of the period.
Bareilles and her bassist, Sam Farrar did an excellent job with the lyrics. Not every break-up song needs to be full of angst, shouting or a morbid depressing ballad. They can be fun, and show the world that it is ok and life goes on. My favorite line would have to be
Say it’s coming soon,Someday without you. All I can do is get me past the ghost of you.
It’s like saying, “Hey, I’m not getting over you instantly, but I will eventually. My life will be so much better for it.”
Why did I choose to write about her version with Ryan Tedder? Ok, everyone knows I love Mr. Tedder and his group OneRepublic. However,I thought bringing in male vocals was a brilliant idea. Not only do Tedder and Bareilles voices mesh amazingly together, but it is the perfect metaphor. It represents that both the exes are hurting. Even though they are, they will see the light and move on.
Shout out to Jonah Hill on his directoral debut! The music video was perfect. Captured that retro vibe with the modern day scene terrifically. Also, I love the choreography Sara put in the video! Some impressive swing dance and directing a whole bunch of people to look like a unified dance is not easy, but they did it! Plus the cinematography was great going from aisle to aisle, and the narrative twist at the end was hilarious.
Congrats to Bareilles and Tedder for recording a wonderful track together. It will be a great break up recovery anthem for many. Showing the world that love is out there, and life will go on.
