Song: What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful)
Album: Black and Blue (UK Edition)
In a perfect world, everyone would accept each other flaws and all. However, in juxtaposition with the world’s beauty, we also have the other side — the “dark side.” No, I am not referring to Star Wars, but the side of judgement, prejudice, and hatred.
Sometimes, the lyrics are written in a certain way to where they are excessive and flamboyant. Even though “What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful), comes from what many would believe to be a cheesy 90s boy band, I see something different.
I know sometimes you feel
Like you don’t fit in
And this world doesn’t know
What you have within
When I look at you
I see something rare
A rose that can grow anywhere
And there’s no one I know that can compare
Alright, so it is not exactly eloquent like Shakespeare. However, think about this: How many songs on the radio do you hear now that “lifts the spirits” (OK, besides Andy Grammar’s “Keep Your Head Up” & Rascal Flatt’s “My Wish’)? Not many, huh?
This song may be from the archives, but the extraordinary message from the song is that it is not the clothes you wear, the things you posses… but the very thing that makes you unique and individual makes you beautiful.
So, give this track a listen. At the very least, cherish your beauty outside and in. You are beautiful no matter what anyone says.
“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” – Audrey Hepburn
