“Late Late Show With James Corden” segment “Carpool Karaoke” this week featured the wildly popular, One Direction. The video dropped on Dec. 15, and already has over 5 million views.
On their excursion around L.A. they sing some of 1D’s hits such as “Story of My Life,” “Best Song Ever,” and “Drag Me Down.”
James made his mark (Corden’s only been hosting “Late Late” since March) this year by being recognized by YouTube as having one of the global trending videos of 2015 (Carpool Karaoke with Justin Bieber). He even made a cameo in the annual YouTube Rewind.
So, why is this segment so popular? Corden states it best on “Ellen.” “These huge stars usually travel with a large team… Suddenly they’re on their own. And it’s just us in the car. There’s something very joyful seeing someone singing hits in the environment we sing them in.” Corden locks in these mega stars (Iggy Azalea, Jennifer Hudson, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, etc.). A captivating featuring is watching artists who are used to performing for crowds of thousands sing their songs in a “stripped down atmosphere.” With the most recent upload, Corden surprised me…
Some bits can grow old over time if you don’t keep evolving them. James changed up, and instead of randomly stopping somewhere to shop or dance… he busted out an “impromptu music video” of the single “No Control” off One Direction’s Four album. The comedy mixed with catchy tunes makes this a continuous sketch to look forward to each time. Sit back, & enjoy the cacophony of laughter about the leave your mouth in this joyous playlist… Warning: You’ll be tempted to blast your favorite jams, and sing the to the top of your lungs in your own vehicle.
